Age-Fighting Superstars: The Big Three to Help You Live Longer and Better

Can you name three supplements that have been clinically shown to extend life and to give a person “more” energy to enjoy their extended years?

Brain Energy

More years of life, and more life in your years? What a concept!

And let me tell you right up front, these supplements are natural, safe, and they work. They have been tested extensively. And yet, most people don’t know about them or use them regularly.

There are a number of reasons for that. In the first place, pharmaceutical giants are terrified by the research that supports the use of nutritional supplements and dietary changes that can cure or dramatically improve the quality of life related to a long list of diseases...without the use of prescription medications. The drug-manufacturing conglomerates want people to use their drugs more than they want people well.

For the most part, the drugs they make are very expensive, and yield high profits to the companies that make them...and nutritional supplements are comparatively very inexpensive. Follow the dollars, and you’ll understand the truth.

In the second place, most physicians know little to nothing about natural remedies, or they ignore them. Most medical schools never cover natural medicine, and most doctors don’t bother to read the abundant scientific literature regarding nutrients. They tend to rely on pharmaceutical companies to tell them what’s working best... especially given work schedules that include long hours and increasing mountains of paperwork related to insurance and government agencies.

But enough of the negative reasons—here’s your chance to get informed and get started.

Age-Fighting Superstar #1: CoQ10Ubiquinol Jump starts Everything in You!

Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) occurs naturally in every cell in the body. Without it, a person dies.

Its main function is to support the “electron transport system” in a cell’s mitochondria—this system is responsible for governing metabolism and energy production. Each cell is like a tiny factory for a chemical called ATP, which provides usable energy for the cell. In all, the mitochondria manufacture 95 percent of all energy used by the body!

Two factors are worthy of consideration:

  • Many diseases cause a fluctuation in CoQ10 and in some cases, a serious depletion of CoQ10;
  • The level of CoQ10 is extremely dependent on a person’s diet.

Many foods contain CoQ10, especially meats, but most CoQ10 is manufactured within the body by a complex 17-step process by the liver that uses seven vitamins and several minerals. Again that is why my GHI Cleanse product is so important. It helps the liver to keep these pathways clear. That is a major reason for taking sufficient supplementation of vitamins and minerals—you must feed your body all that it needs to produce CoQ10, and even as you do, also take CoQ10 supplementation directly to ensure you have enough CoQ10 to produce the energy your cells need.

Ironically, the body uses this same 17-step process to make cholesterol, which explains why statin cholesterol-lowering drugs also lower CoQ10.

Why do people become deficient in CoQ10? Some lack the vitamins and minerals necessary for its production. This is especially true for elderly people. Others are taking drugs that lower the level—not only statins but other prescription medications including blood pressure medications, anti-diabetic drugs, tricyclic and phenothiazine antidepressants, birth control pills, and many others. And, last but certainly not least, stress and disease can cause CoQ10 to drop to dangerously low levels.

A Powerful Antioxidant.

Apart from its function as an energy generator, CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant, and is the first line of defense against the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, one of the main causes of atherosclerosis. CoQ10 has a special ability to remove dangerous levels of iron from cells. Excess iron causes free radicals and lipid per oxidation—two things that can lead to the development of cancer in cells. High iron levels are also a major cause of strokes and heart attacks, as well as cancer.

Let me point out three important things at this point:

  1. Nearly all studies involving CoQ10 show dramatic results. In fact, the studies that do not show significant results are ones that used powdered CoQ10 in capsule form. Powder in a capsule results in poor absorption and distribution. CoQ10 needs to be taken in capsules that have a liquid form of the nutrient. Health Masters CoQ10Ubiquinol formula is liquid.
  2. Combine CoQ10 with Other Antioxidant Nutrients. People who have low CoQ10 are nearly always low in several other vitamins and minerals. The results in most CoQ10-related studies are always better in studies that combine CoQ10 with an enlarged vitamin and mineral intake.

In the brain, for example, CoQ10 works much better when combined with other nutrients associated with brain energy, such as pyruvate, acetyl-L-carnitine (and L-carnitine), Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Malate, and B Complex vitamins.

Most medical research studies focus on one nutrient or one element. The truth is, nutrients work best in combination, not separately. For example, one test showed that mice treated with either CoQ10Ubiquinol or vitamin E alone showed no improvement in learning. But when the two substances were combined, the mice demonstrated significant improvement—including the ability to learn rapidly.

It is especially important for CoQ10 to be combined with other antioxidants. A study involving Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) showed this dramatically—the study revealed that the longer a person had ALS, the more the CoQ10 supply in the person became “oxidized.” In other words, the antioxidant gave way to becoming a free radical itself. The way to keep this from happening is to have high doses of other antioxidants at work alongside the CoQ10 to keep the CoQ10 effective. For this and other reasons, CoQ10 and other antioxidant supplements should be refrigerated—this helps keep them from oxidation.
  3. Build Up Gene Function. CoQ10 has been shown to regulate 694 genes associated with metabolism and cell signaling (vital for health). A “loss” of genetic control is found in more and more diseases, especially cancer and neurological disorders.

CoQ10Ubiquinol and Your Heart.

CoQ10 provides amazing help for the heart and cardiovascular system.

If the heart muscle is damaged, either by a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or disease (congestive heart failure), the healing process requires far more CoQ10 than can be supplied by the diet, and especially the typical American diet. Heart biopsies of patients with cardiac disease have shown a CoQ10 deficiency of 50-75 percent! Tremendous deficiencies have also been shown in people suffering from mitral valve stenosis, angina, cardiomyopathy, and congenital heart disease. Those with coronary artery disease nearly always have significantly lower amounts of CoQ10 in their blood.

The heart beats about 100,000 times a day, pumping more than two thousand gallons of blood through thousands of miles of blood vessels. This requires ENERGY...and CoQ10 is the major source for production of that energy within the heart muscle.

Amazing Results! Congestive heart failure is a condition that is on the increase in our nation, and studies are showing impressive benefits from CoQ10 supplementation, even in fairly low doses. In one study, patients had impressive results with only 30 mg of CoQ10Ubiquinol daily. In another study, 55 percent of the people given low daily doses of CoQ10 showed significant improvement in only two months, and thirty percent of these patients had a dramatic recovery from the fluid buildup in their lungs.

In another study, patients with mild to moderate congestive heart failure were given doses of 50 to 150 mg a day. Within three months, most of the subjects saw improvement in their leg swelling, shortness of breath, arrhythmia, heart palpitations, and nighttime urination. Many other doctor-administered tests related to heart function—such as ejection fraction, cardiac output, stroke volume, and cardiac index—showed improvement. When you combine the CoQ10 with Cortico B5 B6 and B Complex vitamins the results improve even more.

What about those with advanced heart failure? One study found that a 100 mg a day improved symptoms in 82 percent of the patients. In yet another study, two years after CoQ10 therapy, patients with congestive heart failure had a survival rate of 62 percent compared to only 25 percent for those who received only conventional medical treatment.

And what about those undergoing heart surgery? CoQ10 has tremendous benefit for those facing heart surgery. In one study, documented in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, patents who were given 300 mg of CoQ10 a day for two weeks prior to heart surgery dramatically increased the levels of CoQ10 in their heart muscle mitochondria. This improved the heart’s energy production and helped protect the heart against low-oxygen output (hypoxia-re-oxygenation stress). I believe that CoQ10 will eventually be shown to have the same highly positive results for all patients facing surgery of any type.

There is no doubt in my mind that even higher doses of CoQ10—perhaps up to 600 mg a day—would produce even better results.

CoQ10Ubiquinol and Your Brain.

Like the heart, the brain uses a tremendous amount of energy—except that the brain never rests! CoQ10 is vital to brain health, providing major protection against free radicals and lipid peroxidation, which are two common byproducts of many brain disorders.

Brain disorders often cause what is known as “excitotoxicity.” This is true in cases of direct brain injury, strokes, infections (encephalitis and meningitis), AIDS, dementia, autoimmune diseases, and many neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Lou Gehrig’s. Countless studies have shown that CoQ10, especially when combined with other helpful substances—blocks much of the excitotixic damage, and can improve and speed up recovery.

Both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases are known to be related to lower levels of brain energy, for as long as a decade prior to onset or diagnosis of the diseases. Both diseases are associated with low CoQ10 levels. When brain cell energy is low, glutamate, aspartate, and other “excitotoxins” become infinitely more toxic. CoQ10 helps increase brain energy.

Other brain benefits include:

• Protecting neurons from viral damage, including the devastation often caused by the mumps virus. This fact may be especially important for autistic children, as well as many other children exposed to the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine.

• Protection against iron toxicity in the brain. Too much iron greatly increases the damage caused by a stroke and CoQ10 is known to lower free iron levels in brain cells.

• Possible protection in the case of a bioterrorism attack, which many believe would result in encephalitis-causing viruses

Help for Migraines. A study in the journal Neurology found that people with migraine headaches had dramatically fewer headaches if they took 100 mg of CoQ10Ubiquinol three times a day. Adding Magnesium Glycinate and riboflavin to the therapy produced even greater results.

No Side Effects!

The great beauty of CoQ10Ubiquinol is that is without side effects and appears to be completely safe in any amount!

Remember CoQ10 is a very powerful antioxidant. It is well absorbed by brain tissues, allowing it to enter the brain in high concentrations. It also lasts in the body a long time—the half-life is 18 hours which means it leaves the body very slowly and that can be a key factor in many therapies. Even in massive doses, CoQ10 has shown no adverse effects. And, it is available without a prescription.

This substance also has significant anti-inflammatory properties, and that puts it high on a list of supplements to help prevent neurodegenerative diseases. (Remember that Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are ailments caused by chronic brain inflammation.)

Plus, it has been shown to significantly increase levels of nerve growth factor, a substance that promotes brain healing.

When tested in aging rats, CoQ10 Max showed improvement related to behavioral problems and learning. It also prevented damage caused by beta-amyloid, the microscopic toxic build-up seen in Alzheimer’s. Human Alzheimer’s patients using CoQ10 showed improvement on a number of memory tests—and the higher the dose, the better the test scores. The most effective dose seemed to be 120 mg three times a day. The study was conducted over a two-year period and the benefits continued throughout the entire study.

Results have also been significant when CoQ10 is used to combat cerebrovascular disease, including small-vessel brain disease (mini-strokes) and strokes.

Age-Fighting Superstar #2:

Alpha-Lipoic Acid Plus for Protection and Energy

A second superstar supplement is Alpha-Lipoic Acid—a powerful antioxidant that stimulates cells to produce more energy. Like CoQ10 and L-carnitine, it is naturally found in the body and especially in blood and tissue fluids. It has a number of amazing properties:

• Lowers blood sugar
• Removes mercury, arsenic, and cadmium from the body and brain
• Increases the level of CoQ10 and glutathione in cells
• Controls the expression of some genes
• Is a powerful way to protect against radiation damage. In fact, after the Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union during the 1980s, Alpha-Lipoic Acid was used to protect from radiation damage.
• Directly blocks excitotoxcity in the brain
• Combines as a powerful ally with other antioxidants and cell-protectors

There are two forms of Alpha-Lipoic Acid—an S-form and an R-form. The Health Masters’ Alpha-Lipoic Acid R-form is the most effective for most people.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Diabetes. Some of the most exciting research in recent years has involved Alpha-Lipoic Acid and diabetes. The substance has been shown to reduce the risk of hereditary diabetes (juvenile) in experimental animals. It also protects the insulin-secreting cells from free radical damage caused by autoimmunity (a condition in which the body mistakes its own cells as attackers).

It has also been shown to improve glucose control in adults with either Type-1 (insulin dependent) or Type-2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetes.

One of the reasons that Alpha-Lipoic Acid is so effective is that is an extremely powerful antioxidant. All of the most serious damaging effects associated with diabetes—heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidney damage, and neurological injury—are associated with free radicals and lipid peroxidation. Studies are showing that Alpha-Lipoic Acid helps greatly with diabetic nerve damage (polyneuropathy), and especially with intense burning pain, muscle atrophy, weakness, and numbness.

If a person begins to take Alpha-Lipoic Acid as soon as diabetes is diagnosed, nerve damage can often be prevented completely. The amount used in most studies is 600 mg a day in divided doses. It may take three months for full benefits of this supplementation.

Specifically, Alpha-Lipoic Acid

• Helps fight autonomic neuropathy, which is the destruction of nerves that control heart function, blood pressure, bladder function, and sexual function

• Helps reverse the harmful effects of high-fructose corn syrup diets. Our processed food products tend to be filled with fructose—often in the form of “corn syrup.” Corn syrup damages proteins and increases free radicals, but Alpha-Lipoic Acid can help greatly.

• Appears, based upon animal studies, to prevent serious birth defects in babies born to diabetic mothers, including serious facial and skeletal birth defects

• Helps heal wounds. Curcumin,(Our GHI Cleanse) the flavonoid extract from the spice turmeric, also promotes wound healing, and especially when combined with Alpha-Lipoic Acid. Curcumin, by the way, also lowers blood sugar and is a powerful antioxidant.

The Declining Brain and Alpha-Lipoic Acid.

A hot research topic related to aging involves something called “mitochondrial decay.” As we age, our mitochondria produce less energy for cells. This occurs in every person over the age of fifty, although it happens faster in some people than others. Various chronic diseases—including diabetes, autoimmune diseases, arthritis, and neurodegenerative disorders—can accelerate this deterioration. Some researchers believe decay of the mitochondria is the number-one cause of many diseases associated with aging.

One of the most important protective substances against this decay is glutathione, a critical antioxidant for brain function. Low brain glutathione has been associated with all of the neurodegenerative ailments, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Low glutathione has also been linked to an increased cancer risk. But...Alpha-Lipoic Acid has been shown to restore brain glutathione to youthful levels! It has even been shown to reduce the damage caused by multiple sclerosis (MS). Some have gone so far to say that Alpha-Lipoic Acid might prevent MS based upon animal studies. It does this by preventing the infiltration of lymphocytes into affected nerves, and by preventing the release of two enzymes known to aggravate MS—MMP-2 and MMP-9.

How does Alpha-Lipoic Acid work? In part, it removes mercury and other heavy metals Healthmaters’ Oral Chelation Therapy helps with this also from the brain’s neurons, and it also binds free-roaming iron and copper, keeping them from generating harmful free radicals and lipid peroxidation byproducts. It does this work without interfering with the normal function of these essential trace metals.

Other Benefits. Three conditions that are more rare, but nonetheless terrible for those who have them, are also helped by Alpha-Lipoic Acid:

Asthma is on the rise in our nation, in part because children are exposed to higher concentrations of pollutants in the air and in their food. MSG has been proven to worsen asthma. Processed foods tend to be full of MSG and other similar additives that produce free radicals within the bronchi of the lungs. Alpha-Lipoic Acid and the recommended supplements can really help!

Some studies are showing that Alpha-Lipoic Acid can help with hypertension and reduce cardiovascular inflammation.

A Word of Precaution. Alpha-lipoic acid is safe in even large doses, but it does deplete the body’s store of biotin, an essential vitamin. This should be countered by taking a daily multivitamin that has 8 to 16 mg of biotin. Health Masters Ultimate Multiple and B Complex supplies these levels easily.

Alpha-lipoic acid can also lower blood sugar levels—great news for diabetics but not so good news for those with reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It may lower blood sugar too much. It is best, therefore, to take Alpha-Lipoic Acid with your heaviest meal of the day. If you have low blood sugar or hypoglycemia don’t take this product before a workout.

Hypoglycemia produced by Alpha-Lipoic Acid may precipitate seizures, trigger migraine headaches, and worsen symptoms of any neurological disease. If you have a history of any of these ailments be sure to take a minimal dose with a large meal. And, be sure to take 250 mg of Magnesium Glycinate three times a day with meals to help prevent migraines.

Age-Fighting Superstar #3:

Amazing Benefits From the Carnitines

Acetyl-L-carnitine (Memory Support) is naturally produced by the human body. It is produced inside us from the amino acids lysine and methionine. The brain, liver, and kidneys are the main manufacturing sites. Generally speaking, it is a lysine deficiency that leads to an acetyl-L-carnitine deficiency.

Both L-carnitine, Corticare B5 B6, and acetyl-L-carnitine play an important role in the metabolism of fats for the release of energy. (Studies also show a relationship to energy production that occurs beyond fat metabolism)

The carnitines enter the brain easily and they help stabilize cell membranes, keeping them soft or “fluid.” A major problem in aging is that cell membranes become stiff and function poorly in that state.

Acetyl-L-carnitine can improve the function of nerve growth factor, which helps to repair the brain’s cells and connections (synapses). This is especially important for people with disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, or brain injuries and strokes.

It has also been shown to improve some of the cognitive problems associated with Alzheimer’s—including memory, depression, and personal-care problems.

Causes of Deficiency. As we age, carnitine levels fall. Other causes of lower L-carnitine levels include:

  • • Certain medications—including anticonvulant valproic acid, anti-HIV medications (ACT, ddI, ddC, and d4T), some antibiotics, and cancer chemotherapy drugs such as ifosfamine, cisplatin, and doxorubicin
  • • Low-thyroid (hypothyroidism) and high-thyroid (hyperthyroidism) disorders—low L-carnitine partially explains the muscle weakness seen with both of these conditions
  • • Strict vegetarianism may also be a factor since carnitine comes mostly from animal meats

Vital to Heart and Brain. Carnitine is vital to tissues that need lots of energy. That means the heart and brain!

Fats are one of the major fuels for the heart, and fat-burning requires a lot of carnitine. The body has a process of concentrating carnitine from the blood into the heart muscle—the substance is just that vital. Studies have shown that adding large doses of carnitine to the diets of children with heart failure can be life-saving.

Patients with angina have been helped with L-carnitine. Those taking a two-gram supplementation daily were shown to have better tolerance to exercise and fewer harmful changes on their ECG than patients receiving conventional treatment.

Help for Poor Blood Circulation. Carnitine can improve circulation in the legs of patients with severe atherosclerosis of their blood vessels, especially with an ailment called claudication. In this ailment, the blood flow to the legs is obstructed making walking a painful experience. The further a person walks, the greater the pain. In one study with severe claudication, 2 grams a day of carnitine significantly improved symptoms and allowed longer walks without pain.

Vitamin E dramatically helps claudication (by thinning the blood and enhancing antioxidant effects), and when combined with L-carnitine and CoQ10 it can provide excellent relief.

Great in Combination. To get optimal results, carnitine supplementation needs to include B Complex, Excellent C, Super Potent E, Magnesium Glycinate, CoQ10, and taurine.

When combined with Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Excellent C, Super Potent E, , CoQ10Ubiquinol and Ultimate Multiple, the deterioration associated with many brain and neurological orders is slowed significantly. The same for combinations with high doses of methylcobalamin (Sublingual Vitamin B12), Cortico B5 B6, thiamine, and folate.

One of the best combinations is that of acetyl-L-carnitine and Alpha-Lipoic Acid. Together, these substances not only slow the aging of the brain—but seem to reverse aging as well!

It is always important to take antioxidants either before or at the same time you take metabolic stimulants. Why? Because anytime you increase energy production in the body, you also spur more free radical generation. That is why the combination of Super Potent E and CoQ10Ubiquinol works so effectively.

Special Health Benefits. A number of other health benefits have been associated with carnitine.

Carnitine and Nerve Disorders. Acetyl-l-carnitine has been shown to improve and even prevent nerve damage (neuropathy), which is a factor in a number of disorders: diabetes, uremia, atherosclerosis, heavy metal poisoning, and chemotherapy. The pain and numbness associated with nerve damage can be excruciating—and incapacitating.

Most neuropathies are linked to nerve inflammation. Carnitine has anti-inflammatory properties, and also increases nerve energy and enhances nerve growth—which speeds nerve healing and increases protection of the nerves.

Think combination! Substances that benefit nerves include the B Complex vitamins, Magnesium Glycinate, DHA Cod liver oil, CoQ10, Alpha-Lipoic Acid, and in the case of diabetic nerve injury, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) as Health Masters Borage Oil .

Carnitine and the Kidneys. A high percentage of carnitine synthesis takes place in the kidneys, and carnitine deficiency is a universal symptom of kidney failure. L-carnitine supplements have been shown to significantly improve muscle strength, relieve muscle cramping, and greatly reduce the incidence of anemia in dialysis patients. These results, over time, help protect the heart.

When combined with CoQ10, L-carnitine has shown even better results in protecting the kidneys.

Carnitine and Male Health. A study of men over the age of 65 compared L-carnitine and acetyl-carnitine with testosterone. They found the carnitines worked better in increasing erectile function, reducing depression, diminishing fatigue, and increasing nocturnal erections. The big plus was that the carnitines did not enlarge the prostate, which testosterone supplements tended to do.

And unlike Cialis and Viagra, L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine and Health Masters HGH Stimulate will not make you go blind, deaf, or drop dead of a heart attack!

In fact, carnitine provides the added benefit of significant heart, brain, and kidney protection. It has been shown to enhance fertility by increasing sperm motility.

Other Benefits. Studies are showing that carnitine can:

  • Stimulate production of bone cells (osteoblasts), so it may have special benefit in fighting osteoporosis
  • Protect DNA from damage, which is vital in preventing cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. At age 70, DNA damage is about 15 times greater than that experienced at age 20.
  • Help keep a person’s antioxidant defenses strong as a person ages

A Word of Caution. Although L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine are well-tolerated, even in high doses, some people may experience mild stomach irritation with doses of 300 mg or higher a day of acetyl-L-carnitine. A high dose may also worsen seizures for those who suffer from seizures and headaches. Some people have muscle spasms and twitching of the face and eyelids. If any of these symptoms occur, cut back on the dose or switch to L-carnitine, which does not create acetylcholine (a primary trigger of seizures and spasms).
