Ultimate Virus Killer: Flu, Tuberculosis, and Possibly Ebola

By the way, if you ask anybody who takes 5000+ units of Vitamin D a day, they’ll tell you they just don’t get sick anymore; the colds and flu just don’t happen. How that works is amazing. Your body makes hundreds of naturally occurring antibiotics called antimicrobial peptides and people have been looking for a long time to see what up-regulates genetic production of them, what increases productions of antimicrobial peptides.

Info Icon

Just in the past couple of years is has been discovered that Vitamin D really up-regulates productions of antimicrobial peptides. Of course it makes sense. Do you get many colds and flu’s in the summer time? No, not really. People have always thought that the reason for that is that people are crowded in the winter time but it turns out it’s probably simply due to the fact that your Vitamin D levels in the winter are a quarter or sometimes one-third what they are in the summer time.

You know a lot of times when even scientists talk about science they confuse facts and theories. For example, it is a fact that children with rickets get lots of infections. But scientists will tell you that children with rickets get lots of infections because their rib cages are soft. But even the scientists don’t know. The statement they just made: one part is fact and one part is theory.

Brain Energy

Or, more people get heart attacks in the winter because they are shoveling snow or because they’re crowded or because of influenza: there are a lot of theories about it. The fact is they get more heart attacks in the winter; everything else is theory. It’s important to separate fact and theory.

What are these antimicrobial peptides effective against? Are they a broad spectrum? Well, there are several hundred micro-peps, maybe as many as a thousand, in the human body, probably even more than that because they seem to specialize in different things. But the cathelicidin, one of the major groups, have incredibly broad spectrum of action in both bacteria and viruses. In encapsulated viruses, many viruses with a lipoprotein coat around them, it simply destroys the coat or punches a whole in the coat and the virus or the bacteria dies. It’s the same with a number of fungal infections. Pretty much any infectious disease that is more common in the winter time is a target of Vitamin D, even some of the more prolonged infections such as tuberculosis. In fact it was common knowledge that sunshine helped tuberculosis 100 years ago, every doctor knew that to be a fact. They published it. They said it was a fact. But people just forget about it. The reasons that sun might help fight tuberculosis is because of the Vitamin D. The same may be true for longer term infectious diseases. Nobody knows what the death rate for HIV infection is or Hepatitis C, accept in a Vitamin D deficient population. If you tell me you know what instance of diabetes is in fifty year old women, I’ll tell you that you know what the instance of diabetes is in fifty year old Vitamin D deficient women. In fact, all of epidemiology will be changed by this because everything we know, every fact we know about statistics, has to be prefaced now with “was that population Vitamin D deficient?”

The effect Vitamin D has on preventing influenza and the common cold should not be overestimated, especially with pandemic influenza. How likely a virus is to kill you depends on not only your innate immunity, that is, how many antimicrobial peptides you have waiting to kill the influenza virus, but also depends on how many antibodies you have, what is called the adaptive immune system. It also depends on how novel the virus is to the human species and how lethal it is. In 1918, there are documented cases of people being well in the morning, coughing at noon, blue at supper time and dead by nighttime. It was that quick. Even though the majority of deaths occurred in the winter time in the United States in the 1918 pandemic, there were outbreaks in the summer time. I would caution people to think that Vitamin D is the cure for influenza, but I think it’s going to be a major weapon for the fight again influenza and even the common cold.

We really just don’t know. It wasn’t an experiment. We just guessed. And part of that is based on the fact that certain parts of the immune system that might overreact are kept in check. Explain that. Vitamin D does a couple of things. It not only up-regulates production of the cathelicidin and other antimicrobial peptides but it also dampens the arm of the immune system that is invested and ordered to cause inflammation. Inflammation is what makes the body to respond to it. What is called a cytokine storm, which is what killed many people in 1918, this explosion of the immune system where it strips, it denudes, the epithelial lining of the respiratory track and people choke to death because they can’t breathe. With this kind of cytokine storm, and there’s lots of diseases that deal with excess inflammation, Vitamin D makes the immune system smarter.

As you can imagine I have been writing books and helping people for 30 years. It's always a blessing for me to hear a personal testimony. Several months ago I had spoken to Brenda from Ohio. Her body fat had gone up and her energy level was horrible. Last week I spoke to her again. She has gone from a size 12/14 to a size 6/8 plus her energy level is through the roof. To put it simply, SHE FEELS GREAT! Every time I speak to someone who is as positive and has such tremendous results, it makes me feel incredibly blessed to be able to do what I do. I want everyone who is reading this e-mail to know that I appreciate you and thank you for your trust. And thank you for allowing me to provide you the highest quality products available anywhere in the world.

Now let's talk about the topic of this e-mail Vitamin D3. Interestingly, I knew a lot about D3 before I began this e-mail. What I didn't know is how much current research has been done and how deficient this vitamin is in the normal population.

Vitamin D3 is manufactured by the body from Cholesterol as the skin is exposed to the sunlight. Since Vitamin D3 is manufactured by the body many researchers also consider it a hormone. In fact, it is the most active steroid hormone by weight in the body. It is used in hundreds of biochemical reactions throughout the body. The purity of Vitamin D3 is critical. It needs to be from a natural source. Most on the market are chemical synthetics. Ours is obtained from sheep wool. I have a pharmaceutical lab manufacture it for me. This is critical because of its hormone like properties. It must be pure. Also it has to be sealed properly by capsulation since it will be oxidized very quickly and become useless if not harmful. Health Masters Vitamin D3 is the highest quality product available today and when you read through this newsletter, which by the way I have been working on for months; you will understand why this is so important.  Again it is the most active steroid hormone by weight in the body.

Much of this information is from an oral presentation.  It lacks the fluidity of my normal e-mails.  But the information, as you will find, is so critical I am sending it today.

Here an interesting review from the Harvard Medical School-The epidemiology of Vitamin D and cancer incidence and mortality:

Higher rates of total cancer mortality in regions with less UV-B radiation, and among African-Americans and overweight and obese people, each associated with lower circulating Vitamin D, and that increasing Vitamin D3 reduces death rates.

Am J Public Health-The role of Vitamin D in cancer prevention. University of California, San Diego

A PubMed database search yielded 63 observational studies of Vitamin D status in relation to cancer risk, including 30 colon, 13 of breast, 26 prostate, and 7 of ovarian cancer, and several that assessed the association of Vitamin D receptor genotype with cancer risk.// The evidence suggests that efforts to improve Vitamin D status, for example by Vitamin D supplementation, could reduce cancer incidence and death rates  at low cost, with few or no adverse effects.

  • Rickets, the clinical outcome of severe Vitamin D deficiency in infants, endemic in Europe and North America during 19th and first 2 decades of 20th century.Rickets were everywhere due to lack of sunlight from the Industrial Revolution.
  • 1820's -Jedrezej Sniadecki-children in city of Warsaw higher rickets than children in countryside-took them to countryside for treatment-Where there was still sunshine
  • Floating Hospital in Boston-took children with rickets into Boston harbor for sunshine cure
  • 1920's-Edward Mellanby-Rickets due to deficiency of a fat-soluble nutritional-also established that cod liver oil prevented rickets (reason for RDA)
  • 1923-Goldblatt and Soames identified a precursor in skin that led to Vitamin D when irradiated by UV-light
  • 1936-chemical structure of Vitamin D3 established as a seco-steroid hormone, and questions it's definition as a vitamin
  • 1970-Dr Hector DeLuca and Michael Holic isolated and identified the biologically active form of Vitamin D [1,25(0H)2D3]

SUNSHINE

In the skin plateau of daily Vitamin D production is only 20-30 minutes in light-skinned person. UV effect is limited by:

  1. Increased melanin pigment increases the exposure time needed for maximum formation and if you have darker skin, it takes more sunshine to make Vitamin D
  2. Time of day and time of season (need solar sun)
  3. Sunscreen, glass, pollution and lack of exposure
  4. Altitude and latitude
  • Vitamin D levels reduced in aging and obesity

These next statistics are amazing.  It shows the problem!

  • At 34 N (Los Angeles), Vitamin D synthesis occurred year-round
  • At 42 N (Boston), Vitamin D synthesis ceased from November to February
  • At 52 N (Boston), Vitamin D synthesis ceased from November to February
  • At 52 N (Edmonton), Vitamin D synthesis ceased from October to March

In other words, if you live up North, Vitamin D won't be made by your body due to a lack of sunshine for a large part of the year.  No wonder so many people are deficient.

Immunity and Auto-Immunity

Including the following, disease can be cause by a lack of D3

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • DiabetesMellitus-type 1-auto-immunity and insulin production
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Psoriasis
  • Promotes wound healing and immune support

The medical literature indicates Vitamin D levels of about 50 ng/ml are associated with peak athletic performance. Of course, recent studies show such levels are ideal for preventing cancer, diabetes, hypertension, influenza, multiple sclerosis, major depression, cognitive decline, etc. It also increases speed, balance, and reaction time, muscle mass, muscle strength, squats, reps, etc.

Professor Heike Bischoff-Ferrari, now in Switzerland, did the largest study. She and her colleagues found a strong positive correlation and suggestion of a U-shaped curve with athletic performance on one test peaking with Vitamin D levels of 10,000 IU of 50 ng/ml but deteriorating at higher levels. It is interesting to speculate that levels around 50 ng/ml may be optimal for athletic performance as such levels are common in humans living in a "natural" state of sun-exposure, such as lifeguards or tropical farmers.

Bischoff HA, Stahelin HB, Urscheler N, Ehrsam R, Vonthein R, Perrig-Chiello P, Tyndall A, Theiler R. Muscle strength in the elderly: its relation to Vitamin D metabolites. Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 1999 Jan; 80(1):54-8.

Sato reported that two years of treatment with 1,000 IU of Vitamin D per significantly increased muscle strength, doubled the mean diameter, and tripled the percentage of fast twitch muscle fibers; in the functional limbs of 48 severely Vitamin D deficient elderly stroke patients. The placebo control group suffered declines in muscle strength, and in the size and percentage of fast-twitch muscle fibers.

"If you are Vitamin D deficient, the medical literature indicates that the right amount of D will make you faster, stronger, improve your balance and timing, etc.

How much it will improve your athletic ability depends on how deficient you are to begin with. How good an athlete you will be depends on your innate ability, training, and dedication? However, peak athletic performance also depends upon the neuromuscular cells in your body and brain having unfettered access to the steroid hormone, active Vitamin D. In addition, how much activated Vitamin D is available to your brain, muscle, and nerves depend on having ideal levels of Vitamin D in your blood-about 50 ng/ml, to be precise." John Connell MD

The evidence that higher 24 (OH)D levels through increased sunlight exposure of dietary or supplement intake inhibit colorectal cancer is substantial. The biologic evidence for an anti-cancer role of 25(OH)D is also strong for prostate cancer.

Conclusion:  This paper adds to the mounting evidence for the influential role of solar UV-B exposure on cancer, particularly for some of the less-well studied digestive cancers possibly suggesting that the maintenance of adequate Vitamin D levels is more critical for limiting tumor progression than for preventing tumor onset. Our findings are generally consistent with the published literature

Cancer survival is dependent on season of diagnosis and sunlight exposure

In this large study, involving over a million cancer patients, our results add to a growing body of evidence that Vitamin D metabolites play an important role in cancer survival

Conclusion:THE RESULTS SUGGEST THAT A HIGH LEVEL OF VITAMIN D(3) AT THE TIME OF DIAGNOSIS, AND THUS, DURING CANCER TREATMENT, MAY IMPROVE PROGNOSIS OF THE THREE CANCER TYPES STUDIED.

UV Radiation And Cancer Prevention: What Is The Evidence?

The residential and / or occupational sun exposure rate seemed to be positively correlated with a lower risk of overall morality due to organ cancer.

The latter years showed even more dramatic results with the calcium/Vitamin D3 group showing a 77 per cent cancer-risk reduction, claimed the researchers. WOW!

There was, however, no statistically significant difference in cancer incidence between participants taking placebos and those taking just calcium supplements, they added.

The women, 1,179 healthy, postmenopausal women who were all 55 years or older and free of known cancers for at least 10 years prior to entering the study, were randomly assigned to take daily dosages of 1,400-1,500 mg supplemental calcium plus 1,000 IU of Vitamin D3, or placebos.

Over the four-year trial, women in the calcium/Vitamin D3 group experienced a 60 per cent decrease in their cancer risk compared to the group taking placebos.

Cardiovascular disease is more common in the winter, more common a higher latitudes and more common at lower altitudes

People with 25(OH)D levels above 35 ng/ml were half as likely to have a heart attack than those whose level was less than 35 ng/ml-John Connell MD

What most doctors and the public have been told is that high-dose Vitamin D can induce calcifications of arteries. But Armin Zittermann, PhD, of the Northrhine Westfalia Heart Center in Germany, reports that both extremely high and commonly low intake levels of Vitamin D induce calcification of arteries. Calcification from overdose of Vitamin D requires many hundreds of thousands of international units and is rare, whereas hundreds of millions of adults are deficient in Vitamin D and suffer from calcified arteries as a result of deficiency. Dr. Zitterman points to a study conducted in Japan where adequate Vitamin D levels achieved via supplementation reduced the death risk from cardiovascular disease by 70% compared to those who did not use Vitamin D supplements. [Current Opinion Lipidology 18:41-46, Feb 2007]

IT IS INCREASINGLY BECOMING APPARENT THAT IT IS EXCESSIVE CALCIUM, AND NOT CHOLESTEROL, THAT CAUSES HARDENING OF THE ARTERIES AND HEART ATTACKS. ONLY ABOUT 3% OF ARTERIAL PALQUE IS CHOLESTEROL WHILE 59% IS CALCIUM. VITAMIN D IS AN ANTI-CALCIFYING AGENT." BILL SARDI

This is why I have told you for years to use distilled water.  If you saw all the inorganic calcium carbonate from my distiller you would never drink that water again.  It builds up in your soft tissue & arteries.

Harvard Medical School-

Summary: In a study involving 613 men and 1, 198 women with measured plasma 25(OH)D levels prospectively followed for 4-8 years, and 38, 388 men and 77,531 women with predicted 25(OH)D levels prospectively followed for 16-18 years, an inverse association was observed between plasma 25(OH)D (25-hydrodyVitamin D) levels and risk of high blood pressure. In the cohorts with measured plasma levels of 25(OH)D.

Men with plasma 25(OH)D levels at or above 30ng/ml. Similarly, women with Vitamin D deficiency showed more than a two-fold increased risk of hypertension compared to women with 25(OH)D levels at or above 3 ng/ml.

Furthermore, in a pooled analysis combining men and women, Vitamin D deficiency was associated with more than a three-fold increased risk of hypertension. Additionally, in the cohorts with predicted 25(OH)D levels, men in the lowest decile of 2 5(OH)D levels showed more than a two-fold increased risk of hypertension compared to men in the highest decile. Similarly, women in the lowest decile 25(OH)D levels showed a 57% increased risk of hypertension compared to women in the highest decile. Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "Plasma 35(OH)D levels are inversely associated with risk of incident hypertension."  Now you know why I am sending you this e-mail.  I checked my blood pressure this week and its 112 over 60.  I am 53 years old & I feel great. When I had my D3 checked this week it was perfect, around 60.  This is one blood test that needs to be done on a semiannual basis.

What This Means

Adequate D3 Helps Maintain Good Blood Pressure In Men & Women

Also, Physicians who advise their patents to avoid the sun without preventing Vitamin D deficiency are doing a disservice to their patients.

To ensure that serum 25(OH)D concentrations exceed 100 nmol/L, a total Vitamin D supply of 100 microg (4000 IU)/d is required. Except in those with conditions causing hypersensitivity, there is no evidence of adverse effects with serum 25(OH)D concentrations <140 nmol/L, which require a total Vitamin D supply of 250 microg (10000 IU)/d to attain.

3 Primary Endocrine Functions Of Vitamin D Are?

  • Gut Absorption of Calcium
  • Reduce Kidney Excretion of Calcium
  • Bone Destruction for Calcium

Vitamin D is essential for life. You can die in minutes from low calcium in the blood which is maintained by Vitamin D. However, you may die in decades from low Vitamin D (autocrineparacrine function).

Dr. Dixon, at the University of Sydney-working with Professor Rebecca Mason's group-has presented additional evidence that Vitamin D metabolites protect the skin from sun damage, and do so via rapid acting pathways that do not involve genetic transcription. As anyone who has ever taken 5,000 IU a day for several months can tell you, your skin is much less likely to burn when you are no longer Vitamin D deficient.

IMMUNE FUNCTION

  • D3 is a potent modulator of macrophage functions, promoting differentiation of monocytes into macrophages and then activating phagocytic and antimicrobial activities and enhancing No production (NO in macrophages promotes mycobacteria killing) macrophages express VDR receptor and can produce Vitamin D3 (1a-hydroxylase)
  • Vitamin D3 normally inhibits CD4t-cell proliferation and suppresses Th-1 cytokines, i.e. IL-2, IFN-g, TNF-a, and IL-12 and may enhance Th-2 response over Th-1

What this all means is D3 greatly enhances immune system function. You recover much more quickly from the flu or a cold and it should reduce the risk of ever developing the cold or flu.

How Much Vitamin D Should You Take If You Get The Flu?

This is antidotal and without research some doctors have experimented by taking 70,000 units per day for 3 days. Others suggest 100,000 units for 3 days. There are no studies on these levels for the flu. The best treatment is prevention by keeping your Vitamin D levels up at 50ng/ml through the winter.  If you take more that 10,000 IU a day from all sources please get your D3 levels checked twice a year so you can adjust your amount.  This is what I do. This is the first time I have told you to do blood work two times a year.  Getting enough Vitamin D is so important that it is worth the test!

What Should You Do?

  • Spend 10-15 minutes in the sun each day
  • Ask your doctor to check your 25(OH) level. This is really important!
  • Ideal levels are between 40-60 ng/ml
  • 1,000 IU will raise you level about 10 ng/ml
  • Dr. John Cannell takes 4,000 units of D3 a day.I take around 5000-10,000 from all sources; it varies depending on the time of year.
  • If you have a serious illness, you should learn all you can and act accordingly
  • If you start having hard joint pain, you may be getting too much.  Remember: CHECK YOUR LEVELS!

What to Do?

If you are making or taking Vitamin D you need to take Calcium at least 800 mg per day. Our OSSOMAG is the BEST SOURCE.

  1. First is to get it from the sun
  2. Second is to have everyone take 2000-5000 IU a day
  3. If you take more than 5000 to 10,000 IU you should follow with lab work at least biannually.
  4. Third common doses given are 1000 IU, 2000, lots of research at 4000 IU. Some Doctors give 5000 IU and 10,000 IU.

Just one example of an important gene that Vitamin D up-regulates is your ability to fight infections. It produces over 200 anti microbial peptides, the most important of which is cathelicidin, a naturally occurring broad-spectrum antibiotic.

And, when you consider the fact that you only have 30,000 genes in your body, and Vitamin D has been shown to influence more that 2,000 of them, the bigger picture of its true impact on your health can be easily understood. It may, in fact, have literally thousands of health benefits! So it is like we are just beginning to scratch the surface of its true potential for reversing the modern disease state.

It's absolutely tragic that dermatologists and sunscreen manufacturers have done such a thorough job of caring people out of the sun-your optimal source for natural Vitamin D. This is one of the major influences that have contributed to the Vitamin D epidemic we are facing, and also, I believe, the autism increases we have seen.

Their widely dispersed message to avoid the sun as much as possible, combined with an overall cultural trend of spending more time indoors during both work and leisure time has greatly contributed to the widespread Vitamin D deficiency seen today-which in turn is fueling an astonishingly diverse array of common chronic diseases, including: (I know I have already listed many of these, but this is so important that I wanted to combine the lists)

Where You Live Impacts Your Vitamin D Levels, and Your Disease Risk

The evidence is very clear that the father away from the equator you live, the higher your risk of dying from cancer becomes, for example. In other words, those who live in higher latitudes have significantly higher cancer rates than those living in lower latitudes: directly correlating to the amount of available sunshine you have in your area.

For example, according to Dr. William Grant-one of the top Vitamin D researchers in the world-the cancer rate in Iceland is 90 per 100,000 people per year. Those in the tropics, meanwhile, have rates of 25 per 100,000!

And he points out that the majority of cancer deaths in the United States are from Vitamin D sensitive cancers. An estimate 150,000 cases of cancer could be prevented in the United States alone by increasing Vitamin D levels throughout the population.

Are You Vitamin D Deficient, And If So, What Should You Do About It?

I still firmly believe that the best way to raise your Vitamin D level is not with supplements, but by exposing your bare skin to sunshine. However, getting sun exposure is not always practical or even feasible, depending on where you live.

During the winter or during other times of the year when sun exposure is not a possibility for you, then supplementation with Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is an option that should be seriously considered.

That said, the way to proceed is to get your Vitamin D levels tested at regular intervals so that you can tell when you reach the optimal level, because the amount of Vitamin D required (whether from sun exposure or supplementation) to reach this level is different for everyone.

It's though that 85 percent of the American public is deficient in Vitamin D and over 95 percent of African American or deeply pigmented individuals. And, in the United States, the late winter average Vitamin D is only about 15-18 ng/ml, which is considered a VERY SERIOUS deficiency state.

You can find out what your levels are by asking your doctor for a blood test called a 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyVitamin D. (Please note, there are two types of Vitamin D tests, and this one is the one you want) There are also two primary labs in the United States and you ONLY wan to us Lab Corp. NOT Quest, to perform this test.

The OPTIMAL value of Vitamin D that you are looking for has recently been raised to 50-65 ng/ml, with even higher recommended levels required for more serious disease prevention. I keep mine in this level. I had it checked this week and it's at 72 so I will slightly decrease the amount I am taking.  But, I feel great, now colds no flu, no back pain, great blood pressure and tremendous energy!

Find Out More About What Vitamin D Can Do For Your Health

This is one case where keeping on the top of the rapid discoveries can be truly challenging.

The recent discovery-from a meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials-that supplemental cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) significantly reduces all-cause mortality emphasizes the medical and ethical implications of promptly diagnosing an adequately treating Vitamin D deficiency. Not only are such deficiencies common, and probably the rule, Vitamin D deficiency is implicated in most of the diseases of civilization. Vitamin D's final metabolic product is a seco-steroid hormone that targets more than 200 human genes in a wide variety of tissues, meaning it has as many mechanisms of action as genes it targets. One of the most important genes Vitamin D up-regulates is for cathelicidin, a naturally occurring broad-spectrum antibiotic. Natural Vitamin D levels, those found in humans living in a sun-rich environment, are between 40-70 ng/ml, levels obtained by few modern humans. Assessing serum 25-hydroxy-Vitamin D (25(OH)D) is the only way to make the diagnosis and to assure treatment is adequate and safe. Three treatment modalities exist for Vitamin D deficiency: sunlight, artificial ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, and Vitamin D supplementation. Treatment of Vitamin D deficiency in otherwise healthy patients with 2,000-7,000 IU vitamin [D.sub.3] per day should be sufficient to maintain your-round 25(OH)D levels between 40-70 ng/ml. In those with serious illnesses associated with Vitamin D deficiency, such as cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, autism, and a host of other illnesses, doses should be sufficient to maintain year-round 25(OH)D levels between 55-70 ng/ml. Vitamin D-Deficient patients with serious illness should not only be supplemented more aggressively than the well, they should have more frequent monitoring of serum 25(OH)D and serum calcium.Vitamin D should always be adjuvant treatment in patients with serious illnesses and never replace standard treatment.Theoretically, pharmacological doses of Vitamin D (2,000 IU/kg/day for three days) may produce enough of the naturally occurring antibiotic cathelicidin to cure common viral respiratory infections, such as influenza and the common cold, but such a theory awaits further science. (Altern Med Rev 2008; 13(1):6-20)

Besides cancer, Vitamin D deficiency is associated with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, osteoporosis, periodontal disease, macular degeneration, mental illness, propensity to fall, and chronic pain. A recent review presented considerable evidence that influenza epidemics, and perhaps even the common cold, are brought on by seasonal deficiencies in Vitamin D. Results of an RCT support the theory, finding 2,000 IU of Vitamin D/day for one year virtually eliminated self-reported incidence of colds and influenza. Even the current triple childhood epidemics of autism asthma, and type-1 diabetes, all of which blossomed after sun-avoidance advice became widespread, might be the tragic Dr. induced sequel of gestational or early childhood Vitamin D deficiencies brought on by medical advice to avoid the sun.
