How Safe Do You Think Conventional Medicine Is?

The medical industry is an overwhelming monopoly controlled by a few companies. In 2016, “The 15 largest pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. account for ~90% of the industry’s total market share, and ~100% of the industry’s profit” with the top-two companies being Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer [1].

However, it is rarely publicized when a company has to pay a settlement.

  • In August 2017, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay a $417,000,000 settlement to a medical receptionist who developed ovarian cancer after using Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder which contained the toxic compound talcum powder (talc) [2].
  • In July 2016, Johnson & Johnson paid $70,000,000 for its drug Risperdal after patients and studies attested the drug was directly linked to gynecomastia [3] [4].
  • As far as Pfizer is concerned, “In 2016, Wyeth and Pfizer agreed to pay $784.6 million to settle allegations that Wyeth knowingly underpaid drug rebates to Medicaid. Wyeth reported false prices to the government for Protonix Oral and Protonix IV, according to the DOJ” [5].
  • “In 2012, it (Pfizer) paid $164 million to settle a lawsuit that claimed it misled investors about the clinical results of Celebrex, used to treat arthritis” [5].

This is just a shallow examination of the deceitfulness which underlies the operations of big pharma.

Furthermore, conventional medicine practice within hospitals is far without risk. According to U.S. World News and Report, “Medical Errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S., after heart disease and cancer, causing at least 250,000 deaths every year” [6]. Dr. Martin Makary, a professor of surgery and health policy at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, explained, “People don't just die from heart attacks and bacteria, they die from system-wide failings and poorly coordinated care” [6]. Here are some statistics highlighting the numbers:

  • “There are more than 7,000 deaths and more than 500,000 preventable injuries from medication errors” (per year) [7].
  • “An estimated 7.5 million unnecessary medical and surgical procedures are performed annually with the number of unnecessary hospital stays around 8.9 million a year” [8].
  • 27% of hysterectomies, number two in common surgeries, did not even need this procedure performed” [8].
  • “The Harvard University School of Public Health estimates that as many as 1.3 million Americans suffer disabling injuries in hospitals yearly, and 198,000 of those may result in death; 7 out of 10 of which were preventable (48% from faulty surgery), and 1/3 from negligence” [9].

Overall, one can examine the dominance of risk associated with entering a hospital and having a surgery performed, test completed, or drug prescribed.

Continuing, here is a chart probing some of the most common prescribed drugs, their uses, and their side-effects (All information was taken from MedicineNet.com).

Drug Name - Uses

Side-effects

Levothyroxine - Synthetic thyroid hormone for hypothyroidism.

Chest pain, increased heart rate, excessive sweating, heat intolerance, nervousness, headache, weight loss.

Metformin - Type-2 diabetes

Hydrochlorothiazide - Diuretic

As one can see, none of the previously described medications are without side-effects, and most of them had a side-effect which may be considered life-threatening. It is customary practice for doctors to prescribe multiple medications in an attempt to cancel side-effects from other medication, but this can cause more harm than good and can be a reason 20% of Americans are currently taking at least five medications [10].

Medication, along with its side-effects, will always be there, and once a patient starts the medical route, it can be challenging to back-track and begin a natural approach. Therefore, why not try the natural approach first and forego the dangerous side-effects?
